About Lee Maye

Maye opened 1969 with Cleveland, hitting .250 in 43 games, and on June 20 the Indians traded him to the Washington Senators for Bill Denehy and cash. He was far better in Washington, batting .290 with nine home runs in 71 games for Ted Williams in Williams' first year as a manager. That club went 86-76 and finished fourth in the new American League East, the only winning season the expansion Senators ever had. Maye clashed with Williams personally but respected what he knew about hitting. Card 595 is a seventh-series high number; it lists him with Cleveland.

Arthur Lee Maye was an outfielder who spent thirteen big-league seasons between 1959 and 1971, most of them with the Milwaukee Braves, followed by the Houston Astros, Cleveland Indians, Washington Senators, and Chicago White Sox. Born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and raised in Los Angeles, he made the All-City team at Jefferson High School and signed with the Braves out of school in June 1954. He batted left, threw right, and was one of the fastest men in the game, timed under ten seconds in the 100-yard dash and successful on 38 of 44 stolen base attempts from 1960 through 1963. He won the Braves' left field job in 1961 and had his best year in 1964, when he led the National League with 44 doubles and batted .304. Shoulder, knee, and back injuries and a 1962 respiratory illness kept interrupting him. Away from the park he was a working rhythm and blues singer under his full name, leading the Los Angeles doo-wop group Arthur Lee Maye and the Crowns and recording as a solo act for decades. He finished at .274 with 94 home runs and 419 runs batted in, and died in Riverside, California, in 2002.
