1969 Topps #267 Vicente Romo

About Vicente Romo
Romo opened 1969 with Cleveland before an April 19 trade sent him to Boston along with Sonny Siebert and Joe Azcue for Ken Harrelson, Dick Ellsworth, and Juan Pizarro. With the Red Sox he shared closer duties with Sparky Lyle, then moved into the rotation in August, making 11 starts down the stretch and throwing his only career shutout, a September win over the American League champion Orioles. He finished the year 8-10 with 11 saves and a 3.13 ERA across 55 games. His 1969 Topps #267, part of the third series, is a solo card and his rookie card; it shows him with the Cleveland Indians, the club he represented that spring.
Vicente Romo Navarro was born April 12, 1943, in Santa Rosalia, Baja California Sur, Mexico, and grew up in Guaymas, Sonora, where he learned the game watching the local Ostioneros ballclub. A right-hander nicknamed Huevo, he broke into pro ball in the Mexican leagues, reaching the Mexico City Tigers by 1963, before Cleveland purchased his contract in 1964. After stints at Triple-A Portland, he was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers, made his major league debut on April 11, 1968, and was returned to Cleveland, where he emerged as a bullpen mainstay with 12 saves and a 1.60 ERA. Traded to Boston in April 1969 as part of the deal that brought Ken Harrelson to Cleveland, he shared closer duties before moving into the rotation, throwing his only career shutout that September. He later pitched for the White Sox and Padres, then returned to Mexico for several seasons before a brief 1982 comeback with the Dodgers alongside countryman Fernando Valenzuela. He finished his eight major league seasons 32-33 with a 3.36 ERA and 52 saves, and built one of the most decorated careers in Mexican League history, entering the Mexican Professional Baseball Hall of Fame in 1992.
