About this card

This is one of the 52 Rookie Stars cards in the 1969 Topps set, each carrying two or three young players under a club or league title. A Rookie Stars card is a rookie card only for the players pictured who had no earlier Topps flagship card - the rookie-card answer on each card names them.

The story on this card

By 1969 Hutton had appeared in three games for the Dodgers in 1966 and was working to establish himself, batting .271 over 16 games that season as a reserve first baseman. Card #266 is a Rookie Stars issue from the third print series, shared with fellow Dodgers prospect Alan Foster; it is Foster's recognized rookie card, not Hutton's. A slick-fielding first baseman and part-time outfielder who hit .309 as a Phillies pinch hitter in 1977, then spent decades as a color analyst for the Expos, Yankees, Blue Jays and Marlins broadcasts.

Foster's 1969 card comes from Topps' third series and pairs him with Tom Hutton on a Dodgers Rookie Stars card, a recognized rookie card for Foster. That season he worked mostly out of the Los Angeles rotation, making 15 starts among his 24 appearances, and it was the year he gave up Willie Stargell's 507-foot blast at Dodger Stadium on August 6, 1969, the longest home run ever hit there. A well-traveled right-hander who pitched for five clubs from 1967 to 1976, Foster is remembered for serving up the longest home run ever hit at Dodger Stadium.
