1969 Topps #310 Tom Haller

About Tom Haller
Card #310 comes out of Topps' third series and is the first Topps card to show Haller in Dodger blue. He caught Don Drysdale on Opening Day and logged 134 games, 132 of them behind the plate, batting .263 with 18 doubles, six home runs and 39 RBI. Los Angeles spent the summer in a five-team scramble in the brand-new National League West, held first place in mid-July, then dropped ten of eleven down the stretch and settled for fourth at 85-77, eight games behind Atlanta.
Tom Haller was a catcher who spent twelve major league seasons (1961-1972), most of them as the primary receiver for the San Francisco Giants before finishing with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Detroit Tigers. Born in Lockport, Illinois, on June 23, 1937, he starred as a football quarterback at the University of Illinois, then signed with the Giants in 1958 and spent three seasons in their farm system before debuting in April 1961. Known for a strong throwing arm, sure hands and a reputation as an unusually cerebral game-caller, he earned three straight All-Star selections from 1966 through 1968 and caught staffs built around Juan Marichal and Gaylord Perry. He finished with a .257 average, 134 home runs and 504 RBI in 1,294 games. His older brother Bill became an American League umpire, and in July 1972 the two worked the same game as catcher and plate umpire, the first time brothers had done so. After retiring he returned to the Giants as a coach, farm director and vice president of baseball operations, and later served as general manager of the Chicago White Sox. He died in Los Angeles in 2004, and in 2008 was named to the inaugural class of the San Francisco Giants Wall of Fame.
