1969 Topps #140 Jim Lefebvre

About Jim Lefebvre
Card #140 in the 1969 Topps set's second print series shows Lefebvre with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Eight games into that season he hurt an ankle, and once he was back he lost playing time to rookie second baseman Ted Sizemore, who went on to take the league's Rookie of the Year award himself, and to third baseman Bill Sudakis. Lefebvre appeared in 95 games as a part-time man for the second year running, batting .236 with four home runs and 44 RBI on a Dodgers club that went 85-77 for its first winning record since 1966.
Jim "Frenchy" Lefebvre was a switch-hitting infielder who spent all eight of his major league seasons, 1965 through 1972, with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The son of a well-known Southern California hitting instructor, he was taught to bat from both sides at age ten, starred at Morningside High School and signed with the Dodgers in early 1962 for $11,000. Three minor league seasons later he won the second base job out of spring training and joined first baseman Wes Parker, shortstop Maury Wills and third baseman Jim Gilliam to form the first all switch-hitting infield in major league history. He was the National League Rookie of the Year in 1965 and a World Series winner that same autumn, then posted his best numbers in 1966, when he was an All-Star and the Dodgers took a second straight pennant. Leg, shoulder, wrist and ankle injuries cut into the seasons that followed, and he shuttled between second and third base as younger Dodgers arrived, playing his last big league game in 1972. He spent four more seasons in Japan with the Lotte Orions, then came back to coach six major league clubs and to manage the Seattle Mariners, Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers.
