About Walt Williams

Williams broke out in 1969 as the White Sox' starting right fielder, hitting a career-high .304 to finish sixth in the American League batting race while scoring 59 runs and striking out just 33 times in 471 at-bats. Card #309, from the set's third series, captures that breakout campaign.

Walter Allen Williams was an outfielder who broke in with the Houston Colt .45's in 1964 and became a fan favorite over parts of six seasons with the Chicago White Sox. Signed out of San Francisco's Galileo High School, he won the Texas League batting title with Tulsa in 1965 and returned to the majors in 1967 after a trade from St. Louis. His best season came in 1969, when he hit .304 and finished sixth in the American League batting race while striking out only 33 times. Traded to Cleveland in 1972 and to the Yankees in 1974, he closed his major league career in 1975 with a .270 average over 842 games. He later played in Japan and Mexico and managed in the minor leagues in the 1990s.
