1969 Topps #283 Sandy Alomar

About Sandy Alomar
The 1969 Topps card, #283, from the third print series, shows Alomar with the Chicago White Sox, the club he began that season with before a May trade sent him to the California Angels. He became a full-time second baseman that year, playing 156 games between both teams and hitting .248 with 34 RBIs and 68 runs, establishing himself as an everyday player.
Santos "Sandy" Alomar signed with the Milwaukee Braves organization in 1960 and reached the major leagues in September 1964. A switch-hitter who threw right-handed, he was valued for his speed and glove work across the infield, playing shortstop, second base and third base through stops with the Braves, Mets and White Sox before settling in as the California Angels' everyday second baseman in 1969. Over a 15-year career he appeared in 1,481 games, batting .245 with 13 home runs, 282 RBIs and 227 stolen bases, and he earned a berth on the 1970 American League All-Star team. After his playing days he coached and managed in winter ball, the minor leagues and the majors. His sons Sandy Alomar Jr. and Roberto Alomar both went on to become major league All-Stars.
