The story on this card
Robertson's 1969 Topps card, number 284 in the third series, is a Rookie Stars issue shared with fellow Expos pitcher Mike Wegener - a recognized rookie card. His debut season with expansion Montreal: he pitched scoreless relief in the franchise's very first game on Opening Day, then joined the starting rotation in late May. Working with little run support, he posted a 5-16 record but finished with a 3.96 ERA, best among any Expos pitcher who started 15 or more games that inaugural year, and picked up his lone career save that September against Philadelphia. A Kansas farm kid who pitched at Washburn University, Jerry Robertson threw scoreless relief in the first game in Montreal Expos history before becoming a starter.
Wegener's rookie season with the expansion Montreal Expos, who had taken him in the 1968 expansion draft, was his busiest and best: 32 appearances, 26 as a starter, a 5-14 record, a 4.40 ERA, and four complete games including a shutout. He threw a four-hit shutout against the San Francisco Giants and struck out 15 Mets over 11 innings that September, allowing just two unearned runs. Card #284 is his rookie card, a Rookie Stars subset issue shared with fellow Expos pitcher Jerry Robertson, part of Topps' third series that year. A hard-throwing but wild Expos right-hander whose wins came in flashes of dominance between the walks, and who is remembered for allowing Willie Mays's 3,000th hit.
