About Gary Sutherland

Selected by Montreal in the 1968 expansion draft, Sutherland became the Expos' starting second baseman in their inaugural 1969 season, playing 139 games there and hitting .239. He scored the franchise's first-ever run and recorded the first regular-season putout by an MLB team in Canada. Card #326, from the third print series, pictures him with the Montreal Expos.

Gary Sutherland, nicknamed "Sudsy," was a middle infielder who played 13 major league seasons from 1966 to 1978 with the Phillies, Expos, Astros, Tigers, Brewers, Padres and Cardinals. A USC Trojan under coach Rod Dedeaux, he signed with Philadelphia as an amateur free agent in 1964 and reached the majors in 1966. Sutherland split time between shortstop, second base and the outfield early in his career before settling in as a regular second baseman, leading National League second basemen with 110 double plays turned in 1969, the Montreal Expos' inaugural season. As the Expos' first-ever starting second baseman, he scored the franchise's first run and recorded the first putout in a regular-season major league game played in Canada. He went on to become Detroit's starting second baseman for three seasons in the mid-1970s. Over his career he hit .243 with 754 hits in 1,031 games. After retiring he worked for years as a scout and front-office assistant for the Los Angeles Angels.
