1969 Topps #325 Jose Cardenal

About Jose Cardenal
Cardenal's second season in Cleveland in 1969 brought a .257 average, 11 home runs and 36 stolen bases as the Indians endured a disappointing year. His 1969 Topps #325 pictures him with Cleveland, the last card issued of him as an Indian before he was dealt to the St. Louis Cardinals for Vada Pinson that winter.
Jose Cardenal was a Cuban-born outfielder who played eighteen major league seasons from 1963 to 1980 for nine teams, most memorably the Chicago Cubs, where he became a fan favorite for his hitting, speed and strong throwing arm. Born in Matanzas, Cuba, he grew up playing ball with his second cousin Bert Campaneris before signing with the San Francisco Giants and working his way up through the minors. Traded to the California Angels, then Cleveland, St. Louis and Milwaukee, Cardenal blossomed into a full-time regular known for stolen bases and gap power, twice leading Cleveland in steals and setting a career high in Chicago with a .317 average in 1975. He finished his career a .275 hitter with 138 home runs, 775 RBI and 329 stolen bases across 2,017 games, closing out his playing days with a World Series appearance for the Kansas City Royals in 1980. He went on to coach for several major league organizations, including three World Series runs as first base coach for the New York Yankees.
