The story on this card
Les Cain's 1969 Topps card, #324, is a Rookie Stars issue shared with fellow Tigers prospect Dave Campbell, part of the set's third print series and a recognized rookie card for both players pictured. Cain had made Detroit's 1968 Opening Day roster as one of four rookies and picked up his first big-league win that May, but arm trouble kept him out of the majors for all of 1969, pitching instead for the Tigers' Toledo farm club. Hard-throwing left-handed Tigers starter whose promising career was cut short by a shoulder injury after a standout 1970 rookie season and a strong follow-up in 1971.
Campbell opened 1969 back with Detroit after two seasons shuttling to Triple-A Toledo, where his power hitting had set a club home run record. He served as a utility infielder for the Tigers that year, appearing in 32 games at first and second base but struggling at the plate. His 1969 Topps #324 Rookie Stars card, a recognized rookie card, pairs him with fellow Tiger Les Cain, a pitcher he had been teammates with in Toledo's championship run the year before. A Michigan Wolverine and 1962 College World Series champion, Dave Campbell spent eight seasons as a utility infielder for four clubs before becoming a longtime ESPN baseball broadcaster.
