1969 Topps #22 Jesus Alou

About Jesus Alou
1969 Topps #22, from the set's first print series, pictures Alou with the Montreal Expos, who drafted him in the 1968 expansion draft, though he never actually played for them. Montreal traded him and Donn Clendenon to the Houston Astros for Rusty Staub that January, and Alou opened the season as Houston's right fielder and leadoff hitter, batting .248 over 115 games.
Jesus Alou was a Dominican outfielder who played 15 major league seasons, the youngest of three baseball-playing brothers alongside Felipe and Matty Alou. Signed by the San Francisco Giants as a teenager out of Bajos de Haina, he worked his way up through the minors with strong batting averages and reached the majors in September 1963, joining a Giants outfield that briefly included all three brothers at once. He was a contact hitter who rarely struck out and rarely walked, a free swinger whose approach frustrated managers even as it produced steady batting averages. After six years in San Francisco he moved on to the Houston Astros, then the Oakland Athletics, where he was a bench player on two World Series champions, before finishing his career with the New York Mets and a return to Houston. He survived a frightening on-field collision in 1969 that left him briefly unconscious. After retiring he spent decades working in scouting and player development for the Expos, Marlins and Red Sox.
