About Bill Stoneman

In April 1969, in just the expansion Montreal Expos' ninth game, Stoneman no-hit the Philadelphia Phillies for the franchise's first no-hitter, one of two no-hitters he threw as an Expo. He led the league in walks that season while going 11-19 with a 4.39 ERA and a league-leading five shutouts. His 1969 Topps #67, from the set's first series, pictures him with the Expos.

William Hambly Stoneman III pitched eight major league seasons (1967-1974) for the Chicago Cubs, Montreal Expos and California Angels, using a sharp curveball that earned him the nickname "Toy Tiger" from his Cubs teammates for his tenacity and slight 5-foot-10 frame. After debuting with Chicago, Stoneman became a workhorse starter for the expansion Montreal Expos, throwing two no-hitters: on April 17, 1969, against the Philadelphia Phillies in just the franchise's ninth game, and on October 2, 1972, against the New York Mets, the first major league no-hitter thrown in Canada. He made the National League All-Star team in 1972 and, from 1969 to 1972, logged four straight 200-plus-inning seasons for Montreal. An arm injury shortened his career after 1973. He finished 54-85 with a 4.08 ERA and 934 strikeouts, then spent decades in baseball front offices, building the 2002 World Series champion Anaheim Angels as general manager. He was later inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame; he is not a National Baseball Hall of Fame member.
