1969 Topps #211 Galen Cisco

About Galen Cisco
Card #211, a second-series issue, shows Cisco with the expansion Kansas City Royals, who had bought him out of the Red Sox organization before they ever played a game. He opened 1969 at Triple-A Omaha with a 5.00 ERA in ten outings, was recalled in June for his first big-league work since 1967, and pitched strictly in relief the rest of the way: 15 games, no starts, eight of them finished, 22 1/3 innings, 1-1 with a save and a 3.63 ERA, matching to the inning and the decimal what he had given Boston two years earlier. His last big-league appearance came on September 7, and he spent 1970 as a player-coach at Omaha before taking over as Kansas City's pitching coach in 1971.
Galen Cisco was a right-handed pitcher who worked seven major-league seasons (1961-1965, 1967, 1969) after starring at Ohio State University, where he captained the Buckeyes' 1957 national championship football team and compiled a 12-2 record on the mound. Red Sox scout Denny Galehouse signed him in 1958, and he reached the majors in June 1961, pitching for Boston, the expansion-era New York Mets and the Kansas City Royals and finishing 25-56 with a 4.56 ERA in 192 games, 78 of them starts. His heaviest workloads came with the Mets, whose manager Casey Stengel nicknamed him "Ohio State." Cisco then built a far longer second career as a pitching coach, working nearly three decades in that job for the Royals, Expos, Padres, Blue Jays and Phillies. He ran the staff for Toronto's back-to-back World Series winners in 1992 and 1993, with Jimmy Key, Jack Morris and Duane Ward among the arms he handled there. Ohio State inducted him into its Varsity Hall of Fame in 1995.
