The story on this card
Selected by Kansas City from Baltimore in the 1968 expansion draft, Fiore became the Royals' first-string first baseman in the franchise's inaugural 1969 season. He hit a leadoff home run in just the team's fifth game ever, the first home run in Royals history, off Blue Moon Odom. He appeared in 107 games, batting .274 with 12 home runs and 35 RBIs, his most productive big-league season. This 1969 Topps rookie card, #376 in the fourth print series, is a multi-player Rookie Stars issue shared with fellow Kansas City Royal Jim Rooker. Brooklyn-born first baseman who signed with the Mets as a teenager, later starred for the expansion Kansas City Royals, and closed his career with Boston, St. Louis and San Diego.
Rooker's first season in Kansas City after the Royals took him from Detroit in the 1968 expansion draft; he cracked the starting rotation and went 4-16 with a 3.75 ERA over 28 games, 22 as a starter. On July 7 against Minnesota he became the first Royal to hit two home runs in a game, both off Jim Kaat. Card #376, from the fourth print series, is a Rookie Stars issue pairing him with fellow first-year Royal Mike Fiore, and it is recognized as Rooker's rookie card. Left-hander who bounced from Detroit to Kansas City before finding his best years with the Pittsburgh Pirates, pitching in two NLCS runs and the 1979 World Series title.
