This is one of the four combo cards in the 1969 Topps set - #532 Bird Hill Aces, #539 Ted Shows How, #556 A's Stars and #572 Giants Heroes - each grouping men from one club under a headline rather than giving one man his own card.
The story on this card
Card 572, Giants Heroes, pairs Willie McCovey and Juan Marichal, the two stars who carried San Francisco through the decade. Both had led the National League in 1968 - McCovey in home runs and RBI, Marichal in wins - and in 1969, while the card was in packs, McCovey hit .320 with 45 home runs and 126 RBI to win the National League MVP award, then was named Most Valuable Player of that year's All-Star Game after homering twice. Marichal went 21-11 with a league-best 2.10 ERA, the eighth straight season he made the All-Star team. The two had been teammates since Marichal's 1960 debut and McCovey's 1959 rookie year, and by 1969 each anchored the club, McCovey at first base and Marichal in the rotation. The Giants Heroes card paired them while both were at their peak, McCovey the league's top hitter and Marichal one of its most consistent winners.
Willie McCovey, "Stretch," was the towering left-handed slugger who hit behind Willie Mays in San Francisco -- a three-time National League home run champion, the 1969 Most Valuable Player, and a Hall of Famer with 521 career home runs. Juan Marichal - the Dominican Dandy's high leg kick fronted the winningest arm of the 1960s: 191 victories in the decade, nine All-Star teams, 243 career wins, and in 1983 the first Hall of Fame plaque ever hung for a Dominican-born player.
