About Hank Allen

Allen had his best big-league season in 1969, appearing in 109 games for the Senators and posting career highs with a .277 average, 75 hits, 42 runs and 17 RBI while playing 91 games in the outfield and a handful at third base. His 1969 Topps card, #623, shows him with Washington and is a high number from the seventh series.

Hank Allen, born Harold Andrew Allen in Wampum, Pennsylvania, in 1940, was a right-handed hitting outfielder who also filled in at third base, second base and first base, and even made one appearance as a catcher, across seven major league seasons with the Washington Senators, Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago White Sox. He was the elder brother of Dick Allen and Ron Allen, and as of 2006 the three brothers ranked 11th on the all-time list of brother home run combinations with 358. Like both brothers, Hank signed first with the Philadelphia Phillies; after five seasons in their farm system his contract was sold to Washington in January 1965. He reached the majors in September 1966 and hit .387 in that first look, but he never won a regular job. His best season came in 1969, with career highs in average, runs, hits and RBI, and in 1972 and 1973 he was Dick's teammate on the White Sox. He finished at .241 with 6 home runs, 57 RBI and 104 runs in 389 games. Afterward Allen trained and owned Thoroughbreds in Maryland, and in 1989 he became the first African-American trainer in seventy-eight years to saddle a Kentucky Derby starter. He later scouted for the Houston Astros and died in 2024.
