The story on this card
Chaney reached the majors in 1969 after his 23-home-run season at Double-A Asheville, sharing the Reds' shortstop job with Woody Woodward and Chico Ruiz as a rookie. He hit .191 with no home runs in 93 games, a year that convinced him to shorten his swing and give up on power hitting. His 1969 Topps Rookie Stars card, a high number from the set's seventh series, is his recognized rookie card, shared with Duffy Dyer of the Mets and Terry Harmon of the Phillies. A switch-hitting Reds utility infielder of the Big Red Machine era, Darrel Chaney filled in at short, second and third before a 1976 season as Atlanta's regular shortstop.
As a rookie third-string catcher behind Jerry Grote, Dyer opened the season with a pinch-hit, three-run homer and closed it with a World Series ring. Card 624 is a Rookie Stars subset entry, a high number from the set's seventh print series, pairing Dyer with Cincinnati's Darrel Chaney and Philadelphia's Terry Harmon; it is a recognized rookie card for all three players. A steady-handed Mets backstop who homered in his first Opening Day at-bat and helped anchor the 1969 championship club before a long run as a coach and minor league manager.
1969 Topps #624 is a Rookie Stars card from the set's seventh series, a high number recognized as Harmon's rookie card. He shares it with Darrel Chaney of the Reds and Duffy Dyer of the Mets. It marked Harmon's first Topps card after a two-game cameo in 1967; in 1969 he returned to stay, appearing in 87 games at shortstop and second base and hitting .239 with 16 RBI and 25 runs. A Toledo-born utility infielder who spent his entire big-league career with the Phillies, holding down short and second as a steady reserve into the club's mid-1970s division-winning teams.
