1969 Topps #28 Mike Ryan

About Mike Ryan
Card #28 is a series 1 card. It caught Ryan just before the best year he would have with a bat: 133 games in 1969, 12 home runs and 44 RBI, both career highs, on a .204 average. That was the only year he was a first-string receiver for the Phillies, and it is the card to own if you want him at his peak rather than as a backup.
Mike Ryan was a defensive-minded catcher who spent 11 seasons in the majors with the Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies and Pittsburgh Pirates from 1964 to 1974. A Haverhill, Massachusetts native and a St. James High School graduate, Ryan signed with the Red Sox as an amateur free agent in 1960 and worked through four of their minor league affiliates before being promoted from Double-A in September 1964. He was Boston's most-used catcher in 1966, hitting .214 in 116 games, and the following year he caught a team-high 79 games for the pennant-winning Impossible Dream Red Sox, then appeared in Game 4 of the World Series as a late-inning replacement for Elston Howard, going hitless in two at bats against Bob Gibson. Traded to Philadelphia that offseason, he caught for the Phillies through 1973 and hit a career-high 12 home runs in 1969, then closed his playing days with the 1974 Pirates club that won the National League East. He never hit much, finishing at .193 with 370 hits in 1,920 at bats, but his .991 fielding percentage told the other half of the story. He returned to Philadelphia as a bullpen coach for 16 seasons beginning with the 1980 world championship club, working for seven managers before retiring after 1995. He died in 2020.
