1969 Topps #350 Richie Allen

About Richie Allen
Allen's two 1969 cards both come out of a .263, 33-homer, 90-RBI 1968. He is the middle man on the first-series National League Home Run Leaders card, #6, between Willie McCovey and Ernie Banks; his own base card is #350 in the fourth series. They close out his Phillies cards for the decade. Fined and suspended in 1969 for missing a doubleheader, he demanded a trade, and Philadelphia sent him to St. Louis before the 1970 season in the deal Curt Flood refused to report for.
Richard Anthony Allen was one of the most feared hitters of the 1960s and early 1970s, a 15-season major leaguer (1963-1977) who played for the Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago White Sox and Oakland Athletics after the Phillies signed him out of Wampum, Pennsylvania in 1960 for a reported $70,000. Topps called him Richie Allen all decade, though family and friends had always called him Dick, and he asked the writers to use it. He broke in with one of the great rookie seasons on record, batting .318 in 1964 with a league-leading 125 runs, 13 triples and 352 total bases to win National League Rookie of the Year. Philadelphia fans turned on him anyway, showering him with fruit, ice and flashlight batteries until he took his position wearing his batting helmet, which is where the nickname Crash came from. He made seven All-Star teams, led a league in slugging percentage three times, and won the 1972 American League Most Valuable Player award with the White Sox after pacing the league in home runs, RBI, walks and on-base percentage. He finished with 351 home runs, a .534 slugging percentage and a 156 OPS+ across 1,749 games. Allen died in 2020 and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2025.
