About this card

This is one of the 52 Rookie Stars cards in the 1969 Topps set, each carrying two or three young players under a club or league title. A Rookie Stars card is a rookie card only for the players pictured who had no earlier Topps flagship card - the rookie-card answer on each card names them.

The story on this card

Handed the Phillies' everyday center field job after Tony Gonzalez was left exposed in the expansion draft, Hisle played his first full big-league season in 1969, batting .266 with 20 home runs and 56 RBI. A hairline fracture in his thumb limited him down the stretch, but he still finished fourth in National League Rookie of the Year voting and was named to the Topps Rookie All-Star Team. Card #206, from Topps' second series, is a multi-player Rookie Stars issue pairing him with fellow Phillies farmhand Barry Lersch; it is recognized as Lersch's rookie card, while Hisle's own rookie card had already appeared in the 1968 set. A two-time All-Star outfielder who led the American League in RBI in 1977 with the Minnesota Twins after rebuilding his career following a rough start in Philadelphia.

Barry Lersch shares this 1969 Topps #206 Rookie Stars card with fellow Phillies rookie Larry Hisle. Lersch made his major league debut that April, working almost exclusively out of the Phillies bullpen as a rookie; his first outing came on Opening Day, when he surrendered a walk-off two-run homer to the Cubs' Willie Smith at Wrigley Field. It is a recognized rookie card for Lersch. Denver-born right-hander who made his 1969 debut with the Philadelphia Phillies, working mostly as a reliever over four full seasons before closing out his career with a single 1974 appearance for the St. Louis Cardinals.
