1969 Topps #188 Rick Wise

About Rick Wise
In 1969 Wise turned in his best season with the Phillies to that point, going 15-13 with a 3.23 ERA across 220 innings, a new career high of 14 complete games and four shutouts, while also contributing at the plate with a .270 average and a home run. This Philadelphia Phillies card, numbered 188, is part of the set's second print series.
Rick Wise was a right-handed pitcher who spent 18 seasons in the majors, mostly with the Philadelphia Phillies, plus stops in St. Louis, Boston, Cleveland and San Diego. A bonus signing out of Portland, Oregon, he debuted with the Phillies as an 18-year-old in 1964 and grew into a workhorse starter, twice making the All-Star team. His signature moment came on June 23, 1971, when he no-hit the Cincinnati Reds while also hitting two home runs in the same game, a feat matched by no one else in major-league history. After the 1971 season he was traded to St. Louis for Steve Carlton, one of the most lopsided deals in the sport's history, then moved to Boston in 1974. With the Red Sox he won 19 games in 1975 and helped the club to the pennant, picking up the ALCS-clinching win and a relief victory in the classic Game Six of that year's World Series. He finished his career with 188 wins and 15 home runs, a rare power threat for a pitcher, before going on to a long run as a minor-league pitching coach.
