The story on this card
This Topps Rookie Stars card, #189 in the second print series, pairs Lahoud with fellow Red Sox rookie John Thibdeau. In his first full season with Boston, Lahoud served as the club's primary fourth outfielder behind Carl Yastrzemski, Reggie Smith and a comeback Tony Conigliaro, appearing in 101 games and batting .188 with 40 walks. His signature moment came on June 12 in Minneapolis, when he hit three home runs off three different Twins pitchers in a single game. A Danbury, Connecticut outfielder who broke in with the 1968 Red Sox behind an injured Tony Conigliaro and spent eleven seasons in the majors with five clubs.
Card #189 pairs Thibdeau with Joe Lahoud as Red Sox entries in the 1969 Topps Rookie Stars subset, printed in the set's second series - a recognized rookie card for both players. That season Thibdeau was in the middle of a three-year run, 1968 through 1970, with Boston's AAA Louisville Colonels affiliate, part of an eight-season career, 1963 through 1970, spent entirely in the Red Sox system without a major-league call-up. He had broken in with the Class-A Wellsville Red Sox in 1963 and worked up through Winston-Salem, Pittsfield and a 1967 stop with the Toronto Maple Leafs before reaching Louisville. A tall left-handed pitcher who spent eight seasons entirely in the Boston Red Sox farm system, from Wellsville to AAA Louisville, winning 73 games in the minors but never earning a major-league call-up.
