1969 Topps #240 Ken Harrelson

About Ken Harrelson
Traded from Boston to Cleveland in April 1969 following a brief retirement, Harrelson hit .221 with 30 home runs and a career-high 99 walks for the Indians. He appears four times in the 1969 Topps set, none of them a rookie card: League Leaders cards #3 and #5, both from the set's first print series, crediting his 1968 RBI title alongside Frank Howard, Jim Northrup and Willie Horton; a Sporting News All-Star card, #417, from the fourth series, honoring his 1968 season with Boston; and his regular card, #240, from the third series, with the Red Sox.
Kenneth Smith Harrelson, born September 4, 1941 in Woodruff, South Carolina, played nine major league seasons (1963-1971) as a first baseman and outfielder for the Kansas City Athletics, Washington Senators, Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians. Signed by Kansas City out of high school, he reached the majors in 1963 and became known as "Hawk" for his distinctive profile. Outspoken criticism of Athletics owner Charlie Finley led to his release in 1967, and he signed with Boston for a lucrative sum, helping the Red Sox win the pennant that year before losing the World Series to St. Louis. In 1968 he had his finest season, leading the American League in RBI and earning his only All-Star selection. Traded to Cleveland in 1969, he retired mid-season in 1971 after a broken leg limited his mobility. Harrelson finished with a .239 average, 131 home runs and 421 RBI in 900 games, and is credited with helping popularize the batting glove. He later spent decades as a Chicago White Sox broadcaster.
