1969 Topps #89 Russ Gibson

About Russ Gibson
1969 was Gibson's best season in the majors: he posted career highs in games (85), batting average (.251), hits (72), runs (21) and RBI (27) while platooning behind the plate with Jerry Moses and Tom Satriano for the Red Sox. That spring training before 1970, his contract was sold to the San Francisco Giants, closing out his three years in Boston. His 1969 Topps card, #89, is from the set's first print series.
Russ Gibson was a catcher from Fall River, Massachusetts, who spent ten seasons in the minor leagues before finally reaching the majors with his hometown Boston Red Sox in 1967 at age 27. He caught Billy Rohr's near no-hitter in his big league debut and helped Boston to the pennant that year, appearing in the World Series against St. Louis. Gibson shared catching duties in Boston through 1969, his best season, batting .251 with career highs in games, hits and runs. His contract was sold to the San Francisco Giants before the 1970 season, and he served as a backup catcher there through 1972. Over a six-year career he batted .228 with eight home runs and 78 RBI in 264 games. He retired after the 1972 season and later lived in Swansea, Massachusetts, until his death in 2008.
