1969 Topps #88 Rich Nye

About Rich Nye
Nye made the 1969 Cubs but lost his regular rotation spot, working mostly in relief as the club built a big early lead in the new NL East before fading behind the Miracle Mets; he went 3-5 with a 5.11 ERA and three saves over 34 games. His 1969 Topps card, #88, pictures him with Chicago.
Rich Nye pitched five big-league seasons, 1966-1970, as a left-hander for the Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals and Montreal Expos, finishing 26-31 with a 3.71 ERA. A civil engineering graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, he broke into the majors with the Cubs in September 1966 and built his career around a strong 1967 rookie season under manager Leo Durocher. Arm trouble shortened his career, and he retired after the 1970 season. Nye later earned a veterinary degree from the University of Illinois and became a specialist in avian and exotic-animal medicine, co-founding Midwest Bird and Exotic Animal Hospital in Westchester, Illinois in 1985, one of the first all-exotic veterinary practices in the country. He served as a charter member and later president of the Association of Avian Veterinarians. He also spent time as a commodities trader at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange between his playing days and his veterinary training.
