1969 Topps #172 Jerry Stephenson

About Jerry Stephenson
Stephenson opened the 1969 expansion season with the new Seattle Pilots, appearing in just two games and throwing 2.2 innings. This 1969 Topps card, from the set's second series, is his only card as a Pilot, a brief chapter before he closed his playing career with the Dodgers in 1970.
Jerry Stephenson was a right-handed pitcher who batted left, born in Detroit and raised in Anaheim, California, the son of longtime Red Sox scout Joe Stephenson. He signed with Boston straight out of high school in June 1961 and reached the majors in 1963. A promising 1964 season at Triple-A Seattle was cut short by an elbow injury. Stephenson pitched for the Red Sox through 1968, including Boston's 1967 pennant-winning club, then closed his career with brief stops for the Seattle Pilots in 1969 and the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1970. Over seven big-league seasons he went 8-19 with a 5.70 ERA across 67 games, 33 as a starter, with three complete games and one save. After retiring as a player he followed his father into scouting, spending 36 years evaluating talent for the Dodgers and Red Sox.
