About Jay Johnstone

1969 was Johnstone's breakout year in California: he set career highs with 148 games and 540 at-bats, batting .270 with 10 home runs and 59 RBI while playing nearly every day in the outfield. His 1969 Topps card, #59 in the first series, captures him with the Angels at that career-best season.

Jay Johnstone was a left-handed-hitting outfielder who spent parts of twenty big-league seasons, from his 1966 debut with the California Angels to his final game with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1985. A platoon and role player for most of his career, he also suited up for the Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees, San Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs, finishing with a .267 average, 102 home runs and two World Series rings, in 1978 with the Yankees and 1981 with the Dodgers. His best offensive stretch came with Philadelphia in the mid-1970s, hitting .329 in 1975 and going 7-for-9 in the 1976 NLCS. Off the field he became one of baseball's most notorious pranksters, filling teammates' gloves with brownies, setting cleats on fire and locking manager Tommy Lasorda out of his own office, antics he later recounted in three books written with sportswriter Rick Talley.
