1969 Topps #613 Jim Beauchamp

About Jim Beauchamp
1969 Topps #613 is a high number from the set's seventh series, catching Beauchamp with the Cincinnati Reds, whom he had joined in an October 1967 trade that sent Deron Johnson to Atlanta; he had already spent the 1968 season with Cincinnati by the time this card was issued. He stayed with the Reds for the full 1969 season but was used sparingly off the bench, appearing in 43 games and batting .250 in 60 at-bats with one home run and eight RBI before being dealt back to the Houston Astros after the season.
James Edward Beauchamp was a power-hitting first baseman and outfielder from Vinita and Grove, Oklahoma, signed by the St. Louis Cardinals out of Oklahoma State in 1958 and named the 1963 Texas League MVP after a huge year for the Tulsa Oilers. Injuries, including a dislocated shoulder that damaged his throwing arm, slowed a career that stretched across ten major league seasons and five organizations: the Cardinals, Colt .45s/Astros, Braves, Reds and Mets. He hit for far more power in the minors than the majors, but stuck around long enough to appear in the 1973 World Series with New York. After retiring as a player he spent decades as a minor league manager and as the Atlanta Braves' bench coach and outfield coordinator, giving him a playing-and-coaching career in the game of roughly fifty years.
