1969 Topps #154 Jim Britton

About Jim Britton
This solo Atlanta Braves card followed Britton's standout 1968 season, in which he posted a 3.10 ERA over 34 games. He remained with the Braves through 1969, going 7-5 with a 3.78 ERA over 24 games as Atlanta reached the postseason. The Braves fell to the Mets in a three-game sweep in the NLCS, in which Britton pitched a third of an inning without a decision, before a December 1969 trade sent him to the Montreal Expos.
Jim Britton was a right-handed pitcher from North Tonawanda, New York, standing 6 ft 5 in and 225 lb. He turned down a football scholarship to Penn State and signed as an amateur free agent with the Baltimore Orioles in 1961, then was taken by the Atlanta Braves in the first-year draft in November 1962. Britton reached the majors with Atlanta on September 20, 1967, and in that debut he surrendered a three-run home run to Johnny Bench, the first of Bench's career. His best season came in 1968, when he worked 34 games for Atlanta with a 3.10 ERA. Traded to the Montreal Expos in December 1969 along with a minor leaguer for pitcher Larry Jaster, he lost the following season to arm trouble and pitched his last major league game on September 25, 1971. Over four seasons he went 13-16 with a 4.03 ERA across 76 games. After baseball he became a special agent with the FBI.
