1969 Topps #177 Ron Reed

About Ron Reed
Topps #177 pictures Reed solo in an Atlanta Braves uniform, part of the set's second print series. The card follows his 1968 breakout and reflects a pitcher heading into a career year: in 1969 Reed won a career-high eighteen games and helped the Braves capture the inaugural National League West title, starting Game 2 of that fall's NLCS against the Mets before Atlanta was swept.
Ronald Lee Reed was a rare two-sport professional, spending two NBA seasons at forward for the Detroit Pistons before turning to baseball full time. After a Notre Dame basketball career and a 1965 signing with the Milwaukee Braves organization, he reached the majors with Atlanta in September 1966 and pitched nineteen big-league seasons, first as a starter and later as one of the National League's steadier relief arms. He made the 1968 All-Star team as an Atlanta starter, helped the Braves reach their first Atlanta-era postseason in 1969, and later anchored bullpens in St. Louis and Philadelphia, appearing in two World Series with the Phillies. Reed finished his career with the Chicago White Sox in 1984, retiring with 146 wins, 103 saves and 55 complete games, one of a handful of pitchers ever to reach 100 wins, 100 saves and 50 complete games. He is not a National Baseball Hall of Fame member, though he was later inducted into the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame.
