About Lum Harris
This card lands in the Braves' landmark 1969 season, the first year of divisional play. Harris guided Atlanta, still built around longtime slugger Hank Aaron, to a 93-69 record and the club's first National League West championship, its first postseason trip since the 1958 World Series as the Milwaukee Braves. The Braves then lost the NLCS in three straight games to the eventual World Series champion New York Mets.
Chalmer Luman Harris, known as Lum, was a right-handed pitcher who spent six seasons in the majors with the Philadelphia Athletics (1941-1944, 1946) and Washington Senators (1947), compiling a 35-63 record. He missed 1945 while serving in the Navy during World War II. After his playing career wound down in the minors, Harris became a longtime coach and confidant of manager Paul Richards, following him to the Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles, and Houston Colt .45s as a third-base coach. He got his first managerial chance late in 1961, guiding the Orioles to a 17-10 finish, then took over the Houston Colt .45s in September 1964 and managed the club through its 1965 rebrand as the Astros. He later managed the Atlanta Braves from 1968 into 1972, leading them to the first National League West Division title in 1969 before falling to the Mets in the NLCS.
