About Jon Warden

Card #632 in Topps' seventh and final series of 1969, a high number and Warden's rookie card, pictures him with the Kansas City Royals. It follows his 1968 rookie season with the Detroit Tigers, when he went 4-1 with a 3.62 ERA and three saves out of the bullpen and helped the team win the World Series. That October he was taken by the Royals in the expansion draft, moving him to the new franchise before he ever played a game for it.

Jon Warden was a left-handed pitcher from Columbus, Ohio, drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the fourth round of the 1966 amateur draft. He climbed the Tigers system quickly, earning an all-star nod at Rocky Mount in 1967, and broke camp with Detroit in 1968 as a rookie bullpen arm. He picked up a win in his major league debut in relief of Denny McLain and, less than two weeks into the season, led the American League in wins. He finished 1968 at 4-1 with a 3.62 ERA and three saves in 28 games, helping the Tigers to the World Series title, though he did not appear in the Series itself. That October he was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the expansion draft. A shoulder injury in spring training 1969 derailed his career, and he never pitched in the majors again, later working as a minor league pitcher, a high school teacher and coach, and a longtime kangaroo-court judge at Tigers fantasy camps.
