About this card

This is one of the 52 Rookie Stars cards in the 1969 Topps set, each carrying two or three young players under a club or league title. A Rookie Stars card is a rookie card only for the players pictured who had no earlier Topps flagship card - the rookie-card answer on each card names them.

The story on this card

In 1969, his third season with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Dal Canton worked almost exclusively out of the bullpen, appearing in 57 games and going 8-2 with a 3.34 ERA and five saves. This Rookie Stars card pairs him with fellow Pirates prospect Bob Robertson, both pictured in Pittsburgh uniforms, and comes from print series 5 of the 1969 Topps set. It is a recognized rookie card for Dal Canton. Collectors track two printing states of the card, distinguished by the color of the players' printed names: one with names in yellow, the other with names in white. A knuckleballer signed off an open tryout while teaching high school, Bruce Dal Canton pitched eleven big league seasons and later coached pitchers for years in the Braves system.

Robertson returned to the Pittsburgh lineup in 1969 after missing all of 1968 with a kidney ailment, appearing sparingly as a part-time first baseman in 32 games. His 1969 Topps card, #468, is a series-five Rookie Stars issue, shared with pitcher Bruce Dal Canton; it was Dal Canton's rookie card rather than Robertson's, since Robertson's own rookie card had already come the year before. The card was printed in two collectible name-color states, with the players' names appearing in yellow on one and white on the other. Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman whose six home runs in the 1971 postseason, three in one NLCS game, set a single-postseason record that lasted three decades; anchored the Pirates' 1970-75 division-title era and their 1971 World Series title.
