About Rod Carew

Carew has two 1969 cards: #419, a fourth-series Sporting News All-Star card honoring his 1968 selection at second base, and #510, his fifth-series base card. The 1969 season was his breakout. Working with manager Billy Martin on aggressive baserunning, he stole home seven times, one shy of Ty Cobb's record, and he won his first American League batting title at .332. It began a run of 15 straight seasons at .300 or better, and he made his third All-Star team as the Twins won the new AL West before Baltimore swept them in the playoffs.

Rod Carew was born October 1, 1945, on a train in Gatun, in the Panama Canal Zone, and moved to New York City's Washington Heights as a teenager. Discovered playing sandlot ball for the Bronx Cavaliers, he signed with the Minnesota Twins as an amateur free agent in 1964 and reached the majors in 1967, hitting .292 at second base to win the American League Rookie of the Year award. Carew made 18 straight All-Star teams from 1967 through 1984, starring for the Twins through 1978 and the California Angels from 1979 to 1985, and won seven AL batting titles, second only to Ty Cobb in league history. His finest season came in 1977, when he was hitting above .400 into July before finishing at .388 with a career-high 239 hits, winning the AL Most Valuable Player award and the Roberto Clemente Award; in 2016 the American League batting title was renamed in his honor. On August 4, 1985, Carew singled off Frank Viola for his 3,000th hit, and he retired with a .328 average and 3,053 hits. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991, his first year of eligibility, and later coached for the Angels and the Milwaukee Brewers.
