1969 Topps #561 Ron Clark

About Ron Clark
Card #561, from Topps' sixth series, pictures Clark with the Twins. He opened 1969 with Minnesota before a midseason trip to the minors, then was sold to the expansion Seattle Pilots in July, splitting the year between shortstop and third base for the two clubs. The Twins he began the season with went on to win the American League West, though Clark did not appear in the postseason.
Ron Clark was a Fort Worth, Texas infielder who signed with the Phillies out of Brewer High School in 1961 before a chain of transactions landed him with the Minnesota Twins. He worked his way up the Twins system, sharing the Pacific Coast League RBI title and winning a minor-league Gold Glove at third base with Denver in 1966, the year he debuted in the majors. Clark played a career-high 104 games for Minnesota in 1968, then moved through Seattle, Oakland, Milwaukee and Philadelphia over a seven-year big-league career, batting .189 with five home runs and 43 RBI in 230 games. He was part of division-winning clubs with the 1969 Twins and 1971 Athletics but never appeared in a postseason game. Known for his toughness, Western style and Texas drawl, Clark went on to a long second career as a minor-league manager and major-league coach for the White Sox, Mariners and Indians, later working as a scout for the Kansas City Royals into the 2010s.
