The story on this card
The 1969 Cubs went 92-70 under Leo Durocher and still finished eight games behind the New York Mets in the first season of National League East play. They had held first place for 155 days. On August 16 they stood 75-44, nine games clear, and Ken Holtzman threw a no-hitter on August 19. Then they lost 17 of their last 25 games while the Mets went 23-7. Ernie Banks, Fergie Jenkins, Ron Santo and Billy Williams, all later Hall of Famers, led the club, with Randy Hundley catching. Willie Smith's 11th-inning home run beat the Phillies on Opening Day at Wrigley Field. Topps #593 is the Cubs team card, from the sixth series of the 1970 set.
