1970 Topps #592 Daryl Patterson

About Daryl Patterson
Patterson's longest outing of 1969 came on July 11 at Tiger Stadium, when he entered against Cleveland in the third inning and was greeted by a Ken Harrelson grand slam. He settled down and pitched a scoreless fourth and fifth in an 8-1 Tigers loss. On September 5 he threw a scoreless eighth and ninth against Baltimore, allowing a single to Paul Blair in an 8-4 loss. Topps showed him with Detroit on #592, a sixth-series card in the 1970 set.
Daryl Patterson was a right-handed relief pitcher who spent parts of five major league seasons with the Detroit Tigers, Oakland Athletics, St. Louis Cardinals, and Pittsburgh Pirates from 1968 to 1974. Born in Coalinga, California, he attended College of the Sequoias before signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers organization; the Tigers then drafted him in the 1964 first-year draft and developed him through Rocky Mount, Montgomery, and Toledo. Patterson worked almost exclusively out of the bullpen, with three starts in 142 games. He went 11-9 with a 4.09 ERA and 11 saves. He appeared for Detroit in the 1968 World Series, throwing three scoreless innings against St. Louis. After his playing career ended in 1975, he spent twenty years with Pacific Gas and Electric, rising to chief inspector. He died in 2025 at age 81.
