The story on this card

Denny McLain of the Tigers topped the 1969 American League with 24 wins, one ahead of Baltimore's Mike Cuellar at 23. The two shared that year's Cy Young Award after a tie in the voting, the first time the award was split. Four more pitchers reached 20 wins: Baltimore's Dave McNally (20-7), Minnesota's Dave Boswell and Jim Perry, and the Yankees' Mel Stottlemyre. Boswell's 20 was the only 20-win season of his career. Topps #70 is the American League wins board in the League Leaders subset, printed in the first series of the 1970 set.

Denny McLain, Detroit's outspoken right-hander, went 31-6 with a 1.96 ERA in 1968 to become the last 30-game winner in the majors, taking both the American League Cy Young Award and the MVP. Mike Cuellar - Cuban left-hander who spent years in the minors before a screwball turned his career around in 1964, then won 20 or more games four times for Baltimore, shared the 1969 Cy Young Award and helped the Orioles win the 1970 World Series. Dave Boswell - a hard-throwing Twins right-hander who won 20 games in 1969 and led the AL in winning percentage in 1966, before a 1969 ALCS arm injury cut his career short. Dave McNally was a Baltimore left-hander, a three-time All-Star who won 20 games in four straight seasons from 1968 through 1971, shut out the Dodgers to clinch the 1966 World Series, and lent his name to the 1975 ruling that broke the reserve clause. Cleveland right-hander Jim Perry struck out 4 Yankees in 2 scoreless relief innings on May 12, 1959, protecting a 7-6 lead. His strikeout victims included Mickey Mantle and Elston Howard. Mel Stottlemyre - Yankees sinkerballer from 1964 to 1974 who won 20 games three times, made five All-Star teams and threw 40 shutouts, then coached pitchers for 23 seasons in the majors and won five World Series rings.
