1970 Topps #101 Bobby Floyd

About Bobby Floyd
Chico Salmon won the lone backup infield job in the spring of 1970, and Floyd was sent to Triple-A Rochester on the last day of camp. After his June trade to Kansas City he joined Omaha on July 2 and hit .292 in 62 games as the club won its second straight American Association title. A September return to the Royals lifted his big-league line to .311 in 17 games. His #101, a first-series card, lists him as an Oriole.
Robert Nathan Floyd was a utility infielder who spent seven big-league seasons filling in at shortstop, second and third base for the Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals. Born in Hawthorne, California, and raised in nearby El Segundo, he quarterbacked the high school football team as a senior and led El Segundo to a Southern California baseball championship from shortstop. After two years at UCLA he signed with the Orioles in August 1963, then worked through five seasons in Baltimore's farm system alongside Mark Belanger, Dave Johnson, Boog Powell and Jim Palmer before a September 1968 call-up. His lone full big-league season came in 1969, as a reserve on a 109-win pennant winner; he fielded the final out of Palmer's August 13 no-hitter and earned a full World Series share without playing in the Series. On June 15, 1970, Baltimore traded him to Kansas City for Moe Drabowsky, and he shuttled between Omaha and the Royals before his career closed in 1974 with a .219 average over 214 games. He then spent some 30 years coaching and managing, including big-league coaching stints with the New York Mets in 2001 and 2004.
