About this card

Cards #61-72 are the League Leaders subset: the 1969 batting, RBI, home run, ERA, pitching and strikeout leaders, National League on the odd numbers and American League on the even, with three players to a card on ten of them, four on #69 and six on #70.

The story on this card

The 1969 American League RBI board belonged to Harmon Killebrew of the Minnesota Twins, who played all 162 games and drove in 140 runs, the most in the majors. Boog Powell of the Baltimore Orioles was next with 121, and Reggie Jackson of the Oakland Athletics followed, hitting 47 home runs that year. Killebrew's total came in Billy Martin's rookie season as Twins manager, and Powell's Orioles swept Minnesota in the 1969 ALCS. Card #64 in the 1970 Topps League Leaders subset, from the first series, carries the three men in that order, printed with Minnesota, Baltimore and Oakland.

Harmon Killebrew was the Twins' quiet, powerfully built slugger of the 1960s, a six-time American League home run champion who hit more homers in the decade than anyone else and won the 1969 AL Most Valuable Player award. Boog Powell - huge left-handed slugger who moved from left field to first base and became the power source of Baltimore's four pennant-winning lineups between 1966 and 1971, hitting alongside Frank and Brooks Robinson and taking the 1970 American League MVP Award. Oakland outfielder Reggie Jackson attended Arizona State on a football scholarship. He played summer baseball for Walter Youse's amateur team in Baltimore before taking over Arizona State's center-field job from Rick Monday.
