The story on this card
Willie McCovey of the San Francisco Giants won the 1969 National League home run title with 45 and was named league MVP. Hank Aaron of the Atlanta Braves followed, and Lee May of the Cincinnati Reds took third in the league with 38 home runs. Aaron then hit three home runs in the first NLCS, though the Mets swept Atlanta. Card #65 in the 1970 Topps League Leaders subset, from the first series, shows the three in that order, printed with the Giants, Braves and Reds.
Giants slugger Willie McCovey hit the final ball of the 1962 World Series: a line drive caught by Bobby Richardson, with San Francisco trailing 1-0 and runners at second and third in the ninth inning. Hank Aaron spent 23 major-league seasons with the Braves and Brewers. The right fielder passed Babe Ruth's career home run record in 1974 and finished with 755 home runs and 3,771 hits. Royals first baseman Lee May collected his 2,000th major-league hit on June 8, 1981, against Yankees left-hander Dave Righetti, near the end of a career that began with Cincinnati.
