1970 Topps #22 Ray Washburn

About Ray Washburn
Cincinnati used Washburn in 35 games in 1970, and he went 4-4 for a club that won the National League pennant, its first in nine years. Card #22, from the first series, lists him with the Reds. After the 1970 World Series he was given his unconditional release, and after a tryout with the California Angels in 1971 he retired. In 1972 he managed the Seattle Rainiers, a co-op team in the Class A Northwest League.
Ray Clark Washburn (b. May 31, 1938, Pasco, Washington) pitched nine seasons for the St. Louis Cardinals and a tenth with the Cincinnati Reds, finishing 72-64 with a 3.53 ERA and 700 strikeouts in 1,209 2/3 innings. He played college basketball but always knew baseball was his game, and he led Whitworth College to the 1960 NAIA championship, striking out 37 batters in 19 tournament innings and earning the tournament's Most Valuable Player award. St. Louis signed him for a $50,000 bonus, brought him up for a look in September 1961, then watched a torn triceps in his pitching shoulder nearly end him in 1963. He came back with a different set of pitches, pitched in the 1967 World Series for the champion Cardinals, and peaked in 1968, when he no-hit the San Francisco Giants at Candlestick Park. He later taught at Bellevue Community College until retiring from full-time duties in 2003, chairing its physical education department, running its athletics and coaching its baseball team for 12 years. He is a member of the NAIA Hall of Fame, the Inland Empire Hall of Fame and the Washington State Sports Hall of Fame.
