1970 Topps #254 Camilo Pascual

About Camilo Pascual
Pascual started the Senators' 1969 opener for the seventh time, then went 2-5 with a 7.04 ERA in 19 games for Washington and Cincinnati, which bought his rights on July 7. His #254 card, from the second series, carries the Reds, who released him that spring. The Dodgers signed him on April 13, 1970, and he pitched 10 games for Los Angeles with a 2.57 ERA.
Camilo Pascual, a right-handed pitcher born in Havana on January 20, 1934, signed with the Washington Senators before the 1952 season after a summer in the Sooner State, Longhorn and Border leagues. He learned his signature overhand curveball from Cuban pitching legend Adolfo Luque, his winter-ball manager at Marianao. Pascual reached the majors on April 15, 1954 and lost more games than he won in each of his first five seasons with the Senators. He went 17-10 in 1959 and later led the American League in strikeouts three straight seasons, won 20 games twice, and made five All-Star teams. Ted Williams called his curveball the most feared in the American League for 18 years, and Yankees shortstop Tony Kubek said it came straight over the top and dove off the table. Across 18 seasons with Washington, Minnesota, the expansion Senators, Cincinnati, Los Angeles and Cleveland he went 174-170 with 2,167 strikeouts and 36 shutouts. He was elected to the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame in 1983 and the Minnesota Twins Hall of Fame in 2012. He later served as the Twins pitching coach and spent decades as an international scout, signing talent out of Venezuela and beyond.
