1970 Topps #115 Alex Johnson

About Alex Johnson
Card #115, a first-series issue, still shows Johnson with the Reds, who traded him to California on November 25, 1969 for Jim McGlothlin, Pedro Borbon and Vern Geishert. With the Angels he led the league at .366 through May and reached the All-Star break at .328. In the final game, against the White Sox, he went 2-for-3 to win the batting title, .3289 to .3286. His 202 hits stood as the franchise record until Darin Erstad topped it in 2000.
Alex Johnson was a powerfully built outfielder from Detroit who signed with the Phillies in 1961 and broke into the majors in 1964. A right-handed hitter with a reputation for bat speed, he moved through the Phillies, Cardinals, Reds, Angels, Indians, Rangers, Yankees and Tigers over a thirteen-year career. The Sporting News named him its National League Comeback Player of the Year with Cincinnati in 1968, and he hit 17 home runs the following season. In 1970 with California he made the American League All-Star team and edged Carl Yastrzemski for the batting title. He clashed with managers and team officials over his effort, and his 1971 suspension in California led to a grievance that became one of the landmark cases of the players' union's early days. He finished his career with a .288 average over 1,322 games. After retiring he returned to Detroit and ran the family trucking business.
