The story on this card

The 1969 National League batting race ended with Pete Rose of the Reds at .348, Roberto Clemente of the Pirates at .345 and Cleon Jones of the Mets at .340. Rose won his second straight batting title, with 218 hits and 120 runs, tying Bobby Bonds of the Giants for the league lead in runs. Clemente collected 175 hits in 138 games, and Jones led the Mets in average on the way to their World Series title. Topps printed Clemente as Bob on this card. This is #61 in the League Leaders subset of the 1970 Topps first series.

Pete Rose - Cincinnati's hometown signing who became "Charlie Hustle," the National League Rookie of the Year in 1963, the 1973 NL MVP and the Big Red Machine's leadoff man, later baseball's all-time hits leader with 4,256. Pirates right fielder Roberto Clemente hit an inside-the-park grand slam against the Cubs on July 25, 1956. He ran past manager Bobby Bragan's stop sign at third to score the winning run. Cleon Jones - Left fielder who hit .340 for the 1969 'Miracle Mets,' caught the fly ball that ended the World Series, and closed a thirteen-year career spent mostly in New York.
