1970 Topps #83 Don Cardwell

About Don Cardwell
Cardwell began 1969 at 0-4 while the Mets scored twice in his first 28 innings. His first win came against Cincinnati, helped by a three-run homer of his own, the last home run of his career. On September 12 he singled home Bud Harrelson off Dock Ellis for the only run of a 1-0 nightcap win over Pittsburgh, after Jerry Koosman singled in the lone run of the 1-0 opener. Card #83, a first-series issue, lists him with the Mets; Atlanta bought him in July 1970.
Don Cardwell was a 6-foot-4 right-hander from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, who signed with the Philadelphia Phillies as an amateur free agent in 1954 and pitched fourteen major league seasons, 1957 through 1970, for the Phillies, Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Mets and Atlanta Braves. His signature day came at Wrigley Field on May 15, 1960, two days after a trade delivered him to Chicago: in the second game of a doubleheader he no-hit St. Louis 4-0, walking Alex Grammas with one out in the first inning and then retiring the next 26 batters, the first no-hitter ever thrown by a pitcher in his first start with a new team. He was one of the better hitting pitchers of his era, with 15 career home runs, and he was a member of the Mets club that won the 1969 World Series. Cardwell went 102-138 with a 3.92 ERA and 1,211 strikeouts in 410 games. He died of Pick's disease in his hometown in January 2008.
