1970 Topps #138 Joe Foy

About Joe Foy
On July 19, 1970, at San Francisco, Foy had his best day as a Met. He went 5-for-5 with 2 home runs and 5 RBI. The Mets edged the Giants 7-6 in 10 innings. That season he posted a .373 on-base percentage, the best of his career. His 1970 Topps card, #138, from the second series, lists him with the Mets.
Joe Foy grew up in the Bronx and signed with Minnesota in 1962 before the Red Sox drafted him. He rose through the minors, winning the 1965 International League batting title, MVP and Rookie of the Year with Toronto, and broke in at third base for Boston in 1966. He played third base for the 1967 pennant-winning Red Sox, batting in Boston's World Series loss to St. Louis. Questions about his weight and fielding followed him, and after 1968 the Red Sox left him unprotected; Kansas City took him in the expansion draft. After a strong 1969 season, the Royals traded him to the Mets. His numbers dipped in New York, and after a brief stop with Washington his major league career ended in 1971. Foy later overcame substance-abuse issues and worked as a counselor for troubled youth.
