1970 Topps #137 Art Shamsky

About Art Shamsky
Shamsky's #137 carries the New York Mets name on a second-series card. He had seven hits in 13 at-bats with one RBI in the 1969 NLCS against Atlanta, the most on either team. He started Game 3 of the World Series on his 28th birthday, October 14, and went hitless in six at-bats for the series. In 1970 he played 58 games in the outfield and 56 at first base.
Art Shamsky was a left-handed outfielder and first baseman from St. Louis who broke in with the Cincinnati Reds in 1965 after a strong minor-league run that included a Pacific Coast League title with San Diego. On August 12 and 14, 1966, he tied a major league record by homering in four straight at-bats, becoming the only player ever to hit three home runs in a game he did not start. Traded to the New York Mets after the 1967 season, he became a key right-field platoon bat on the 1969 World Series champions, batting .300 with 14 home runs during the regular season and starring in the NLCS sweep of the Atlanta Braves. He closed his career with the Chicago Cubs and Oakland Athletics in 1972. He was inducted into the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1994.
