1970 Topps #60 Jim Wynn

About Jim Wynn
Wynn's #60 came out in the first series with the Astros. In 1969 he scored 113 runs, stole 23 bases and struck out 142 times. He finished 15th in the MVP voting, and teammate Joe Morgan said that year that Wynn never saw a fastball anymore. In 1970 he batted .282 with 27 home runs and 88 RBI. He also stole 24 bases and drew 106 walks, for a .394 on-base percentage.
James Sherman "Jim" Wynn was nicknamed "Toy Cannon" for generating outsized power from a compact frame. He spent eleven of his fifteen major league seasons (1963-1977) with the Houston Colt .45's/Astros before two seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers and a final stretch split among the Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees and Milwaukee Brewers. Converted from shortstop to center field early in his career, he paired power with patience at the plate, leading the majors in walks in 1969. His signature power season came in 1967, when he hit a career-high 37 home runs and drove in 107, earning his first All-Star selection and an 11th-place MVP finish. A three-time All-Star (1967, 1974, 1975), he set a career high with 108 RBIs in 1974 with the Dodgers, helped Los Angeles to the National League pennant, and was named The Sporting News Comeback Player of the Year. The Astros retired his number 24 on June 25, 2005. Career totals: 291 home runs, 964 RBI, 1,105 runs and 225 stolen bases over 1,920 games.
